The Russian Intelligentsia: Past and Present

We often discuss the topic of Russia without thinking beyond the top government officials and the Kremlin. But Russia's writers, artists, intellectuals, and journalists have also shaped social and political life even as the central government continued to dominate. This course will explore the history of the Russian intelligentsia and cultural life, both in close opposition to and separate from politics. Join Dr. Megan Dixon as she discusses 18th and early 19th century developments, the ferment at the end of the 19th century, the development of artistic and civic life in the Soviet period, and the turbulence in Russian social and political life since the end of the Soviet Union.
